What Happens After I Place My Baby for Adoption?

View Waiting Families

If you’re thinking about adoption, you may already be wondering:

“What happens to me after it’s over?”
“Will anyone still care about how I feel?”
“What does life look like after placement?”

These are important questions — and you’re not alone in asking them.

At Adoption Network Law Center (ANLC), we believe that adoption isn’t the end of your story — it’s the beginning of a new chapter. And your healing, your grief, your growth, and your future all matter.

Here’s what you can expect after you place your baby for adoption — and how you’ll continue to be supported.

You Are Not Forgotten

After placement, you may worry that once the paperwork is signed, you’ll be left on your own.

Not here.

ANLC provides ongoing contact, care, and connection — including:

  • Emotional support and referrals to counseling
  • Help managing your post-adoption communication plan
  • Access to resources tailored for birth mothers
  • Space and time to process what you’ve been through, at your pace

You May Feel a Range of Emotions

Adoption is an act of love — but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

You may feel:

  • Grief
  • Peace
  • Doubt
  • Relief
  • Anger
  • Pride
  • Confusion

There is no one way to feel — and no timeline for how long healing takes.

Whether your emotions come in waves or silence, it’s okay. We’re here to walk beside you without judgment.

Staying Connected (If You Chose Open or Semi-Open Adoption)

If you created an open or semi-open adoption plan, you may receive:

  • Letters and photos
  • Updates through a secure portal or your advisor
  • Texts, video calls, or in-person visits
  • Special updates for birthdays, holidays, or milestones

You can also adjust the level of contact over time if needed — more, less, or simply different. Your voice continues to matter.

Seeking Privacy (If You Chose a Closed Adoption)

If you chose a closed adoption, we respect that completely. You can still:

  • Leave a message or letter for your child (to be shared later, if they ask)
  • Reach out to us years later if you want to revisit your plan
  • Stay private, silent, or anonymous — always your choice

Even in closed adoptions, you’re never erased. You’re honored, always.

Finding Support

You don’t have to go through this alone.

We can help connect you to:

  • Birth mother support groups
  • Post-placement therapy and mental health care
  • Peer mentorship
  • Scholarships or resources for school, work, or stability
  • Spiritual or grief counseling (if requested)

No matter where you are emotionally, you deserve healing and hope.

Key Adoption Agency Considerations

Placing your baby for adoption is a decision born of courage — but the journey doesn’t end at the hospital.

You still matter.
Your emotions are valid.
Your healing is worth prioritizing.

And we’re here — not just before and during the adoption, but after.
